A Few Tips for Safe Exercise in the Heat

We sure are enjoying this sunshine that has finally made its arrival this summer! It looks like things are heating up, and should stay this way for a little while. Most of us anticipate being able to take our workouts to the outdoors, but it needs to be done with care. As your specialists in sports medicine and physical therapy, we at Bellevue Bone and Joint Physicians can’t stress enough the importance of safe exercise during NW Washington hot spells. Here are a few tips:

Stay hydrated: The most important thing to be aware of is your hydration during workouts in the heat in order to avoid heat exhaustion or stroke. Drink plenty of water before and during your workout, and be sure to replace any fluids lost during your exercising immediately after.

Wear lightweight, comfortably fitting clothes: Light colors will reflect the sun, keeping you cooler. Choose breathable materials to keep sweat and heat from being trapped close to your skin.

Choose morning workouts: In the morning, you are at your peak performance and are well rested. Morning workouts are also a great energy booster for the rest of your day, and a good way to get your metabolism going. Also, mornings are much cooler than midday or afternoon, when the sun and heat are at their peak.

Don’t forget the sunscreen: Sometimes sunscreen is forgotten if it isn’t being used for swimming or sitting by the pool. Choose a sunscreen that is sweat or water resistant, and apply it up to 30 minutes before your workout.

Most of all, we want you to enjoy the sun while it’s here in NW Washington! For information about sports medicine, physical therapy or other services Bellevue Bone and Joint Physicians provide, contact us today!
