Thomas Trumble, MD

Dr. Trumble completed medical school at Yale University School of Medicine and he continued his orthopaedic residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. After completing residency training, Dr. Trumble completed a Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship at Duke University in 1984 followed by a Hand and Reconstructive Fellowship at Harvard University at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He taught at Yale University for four years as an assistant professor before moving his family in Seattle to join the University of Washington. For twenty years he served as chief of the hand surgery service and the director of the fellowship training. Because of his interest in bringing specialty hand surgery to the Eastside, Dr. Trumble established an office practice on the Eastside in 1998. In 2010, Dr. Trumble retired from teaching at the University of Washington to focus on patient care based at the Bellevue Bone and Joint Physicians with a surgical practice focused at Overlake Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Trumble has also recently been named one of Seattle Met magazine's Top Doctors for 2011 in the Seattle area.

Key accomplishments:

• Was in the first group of physicians to take and complete the Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery offered by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
• Started the first hand surgery fellowship in Washington at the University of Washington in 1990.
• Served on the board of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
• Served on the board of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand.
• Served as Treasurer for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand
• Served on the Board of Orthopaedic Specialists for the American Academy of Orthopaedic surgery
• Chaired or co-chaired over 20 regional and national courses on hand surgery
• Published over 100 articles and chapters in hand surgery
• Has edited 5 textbooks in Hand Surgery including the 2nd Edition of Principles of Hand Surgery published in 2009.

Philosophy for patient care: Dr. Trumble cares for patients with a ‘hands on approach’. “By listening to patients and placing yourself in their position, you can best plan treatments that relieve pain and improve function so that patients can return to the activities that they enjoy.”

Special Interests:

• The treatment of arthritis of the hand, wrist and elbow using advanced techniques of joint replacement and arthroscopy
• The treatment of sports injuries of the upper extremity with multiple publications of new techniques for minimally invasive surgery
• The treatment of nerve disorders with techniques such as endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery. The treatment of complex fractures of the hand, wrist and elbow with a role in developing new fracture devices to better treat patients.

Recreational Philosophy: Stay active and have fun. Dr. Trumble enjoys skiing, golf, tennis, scuba diving, cycling and photography.
